Plasterers in Leeds

Cracked ceilings, walls that have blown after a leak, a room that has just been rewired and is covered in chases, or a pebble-dashed front you want rendered smooth. Plastering is usually the step between messy building work and a room you can decorate.

It is often booked alongside another trade: after a rewire, a knock-through, a new kitchen, or a roof leak that has come through the ceiling.

Scope of work

  • Skim coats over existing walls and ceilings
  • Full re-plastering back to brick
  • Ceiling repairs and replacement after leaks
  • Plasterboard and dry lining
  • External render, including through-coloured systems
  • Making good after electrical and plumbing work
  • Coving and cornice repairs

Signs a wall or ceiling needs attention

  • Hollow-sounding patches when you tap the wall
  • Cracks running across a ceiling, or plaster that bulges
  • Crumbling, salty plaster low on a wall, which can point to damp
  • Old textured ceilings you would like covered

How the job is handled

Floors and furniture are covered and the room is left swept. New plaster needs time to dry before it is painted, and you are told how long that will be for that room at that time of year.

Where plaster has failed because of damp, the cause gets looked at first. Re-plastering over a wet wall just means doing it again next year.

In Leeds

Older Leeds terraces often have lime plaster on solid stone or brick walls, which behaves differently from modern gypsum. Patching one with the other can crack or trap moisture, so the existing finish is checked before anything goes on.

FAQs

Plastering & Rendering questions

Can you plaster over Artex?

Usually, yes; a ceiling can be skimmed over a textured finish. Artex applied before 2000 may contain asbestos, so it should be tested before anyone sands or scrapes it. Skimming over it leaves it undisturbed.

How long before new plaster can be painted?

Anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on thickness, heating and the season. It is dry when it has gone from dark brown to an even pale pink, and the first coat should be a thinned mist coat.

Do you do external render?

Yes, including traditional sand and cement and modern through-coloured renders that never need painting.

Can you make good after a rewire?

Yes. Filling chases and patching after electrical work is one of the most common plastering jobs, and it can go on the same quote as the rewire.
